How to Care for Designer Eyewear: Cleaning, Storage & Maintenance Tips

Do you wear your glasses every day at work, while running errands, or relaxing at home? If you do, then you need good habits to keep your high-quality frames in good condition.

Taking care of your glasses is quick and easy once you know what to do and what to avoid. A few simple habits will keep your lenses clear and your frames looking good for years.

  • Rinse your glasses before wiping them. It’s common to grab a shirt, paper towel, or tissue, but these can leave tiny scratches over time. Instead, rinse your glasses under lukewarm water to wash away dust and small particles. Avoid hot water, since it can warp acetate frames and harm lens coatings.
  • Always use mild dish soap to gently clean both sides of the lenses and frame. Just a little on your fingertips is enough for the job. Oil and debris usually hide under the nose pads and where the lenses meet, so pay closer attention here.
  • Thoroughly rinse the glasses to remove the soap, and then shake off excess water. Using a clean microfiber cloth, dry them off. Remember to wash your cloth by hand occasionally, since trapped dirt can scratch your lenses.
  • Do not wipe your lenses when they are dry. If you need a quick touch-up, use a spray lens cleaner made for coated lenses first. Dust on a dry lens can scratch the surface, even if you use a soft cloth.
  • Store your glasses in a hard case to protect them from drops, pressure, and the mess that can occur in bags or purses. Soft pouches work for short periods, but only a hard case offers real protection. If you do not have your case, place your glasses upside down with the temples open on a clean surface. Avoid putting them lens-down to help prevent scratches.
  • Keeping your glasses away from heat is a great idea. High temperatures damage the lens coatings and cause the acetate frames to warp.
  • Do not leave glasses in the bathroom; the steam and humidity loosen screws and damage metal parts.
  • When putting on and taking off your glasses, please use both hands. Holding both sides of the frames keeps the temples straight and prevents the frame from twisting. Using only one hand can stretch one side and cause pain and soreness over time.
  • Avoid pushing your glasses onto your head. Although it is common, this stretches the arms and can bend the frame. Hair products may also get on the lenses, leaving a tough-to-clean film.
  • Do not try to fix loose or crooked frames yourself. If your glasses do not feel right, visit your eye doctor for a professional adjustment. Most optical shops can tighten screws, replace nose pads, and realign frames in just a few minutes.
  • Schedule a professional cleaning for your glasses once a year. Even with good home care, a professional cleaning makes a difference. Many optical shops use ultrasonic cleaning to remove dirt from hinges and small spaces. A yearly deep clean and adjustment can help your eyewear last longer.

Your glasses are part of your daily routine. With a few gentle, consistent habits, you can keep them sharp, clear, and comfortable, making your investment in quality eyewear worthwhile.
